Geleta Island Marine Education Center, Bocas

STRI has established a site for education and research, located on Isla Colon, in the Bocas del Toro region of eastern panama. The students and scientists that participate in the studies done here have access to an amazing variety of marine and terrestrial biota. This station is positioned among serene forestry, a remarkable coastal lagoon system, and a number of islands and reefs.

Bocas del Toro is a intricate region of islands, mainland bays, rivers and forested mountain slopes on the Caribbean side of the Panamanian isthmus. The vast collections of marine and terrestrial ecosystems make Bocas an ideal area to study natural environments. However, Bocas is also a socio-politically complex setting-a site with fisheries, rising tourism, agriculture and a considerably large population of endangered sea turtles and manatees.

Bocas del Toro is also the best setting for carrying out paleoecological studies that will aid in the discovery of history in the Isthmus of Panama. The rocks and fossils around Bocas hold the key to understanding when and where the Isthmus began rising, and when and where it closed, separating the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Pinpointing the time sequence of this division, will teach us what caused the structure or trenching of the Gulf Stream.

STRI's Galeta Island Marine Education center-
On the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal , near the city of Colon , is where STRI's Galeta Island Marine Education Center is located, bordering a fringing coral reef, mangrove forest, and collections of sea grass. The site of a study on the biological effects of a major oil spill, Galeta serves as key location for marine environmental observation, and, in recent times, has become an educational site with live exhibits for local and international visitors. An executive arrangement for use of the area including neighboring lands for research, education and eco-tourism is presently being developed to allow joint use by STRI, local universities, members of the local area and visitors alike.
